Tokyo Olympics: Everything you need to know about India’s lion-hearted golfer Aditi Ashok | Tokyo Olympics News

Saturday began with a lot of hope for a historic golf medal for India at the Olympics, thanks to golfer Aditi Ashok. Aditi had already put India firmly on the Olympic golf map by staying in second position at the end of the first three rounds played.
Aditi, who had been one of the most consistent golfers across the first three rounds of the women’s golf competition, narrowly missed out on a medal though, after finishing fourth in a field of 60 golfers. And with that she is also now the Indian golfer with the best finish ever at the Olympics. Golf remember has been played in only four editions so far (1900, 1904, 2016 and 2020).

In the 2016 Rio Games, where golf made a comeback to the Olympic programme, there were three Indian golfers overall – Anirban Lahiri finished 57th, SSP Chaurasia finished tied 50th and Aditi was 41st.
So this is India’s best performance in golf at the Olympics by a long way.
Despite missing a medal by a whisker, Aditi’s performance needs to be celebrated. After finishing 41st at the Rio Olympics, she has clearly improved by leaps and bounds. She is ranked 200th in the world, but stayed in medal contention, along with world number one and eventual gold medallist Nelly Korda of USA, through three rounds of play.

A 3 under 68 score in the final round with 5 birdies was not enough for her to remain in the top three. At the end of the day too many par scores saw her drop out of the medal contention. The 2 bogeys in the final round also of course didn’t help.
Aditi Ashok might not be on the podium in Saitama (where the golf course is located), but she has become a household name in India thanks to her lion-hearted effort on the greens.

Here’s everything you need to know about Indian golfer Aditi Ashok:
Name: Aditi Ashok
Age: 23
Sport: Golf
Born: March 29, 1998 in Bengaluru
Height: 5 feet 8 inches

Aditi was born in Bengaluru in 1998 and started playing golf at the age of five. Her father took her to the Karnataka Golf Association Driving Range, when she showed an inclination for the sport.
Her parents have always supported her and in fact have also caddied for her. At the Rio Olympics in 2016, which was Aditi’s maiden Olympic appearance, after golf made a comeback to the Olympic programme for the first time since 1904, her father was her caddie. At the Tokyo Olympics, her mother Maheshwari caddied for her.
Aditi Ashok was just 18 when she hit the Olympic Golf Course in Rio with her father as a caddie. Aditi, who was the lone Indian golfer in the women’s field at the Rio Games, finished 41st.

Watching, observing, and playing alongside top golfers was a huge learning curve for Aditi. When she left Rio she had a bagful of knowledge and experience.
Five years down the line, Aditi made her second Olympic appearance, with her mother, Maheshwari, as her caddie, and the Bengaluru girl stunned everyone with her performance.
“The women did well in Rio and that is a motivating factor for me to do well this time in Tokyo,” Aditi had told TimesofIndia.com in an interview from the US ahead of the Tokyo Olympics.
One of the aspects of her game which the commentators have been raving about is her putting. Her putter didn’t let her down by and large, with her putting skills being tagged ‘supernatural’.
Take a bow, Aditi Ashok.
She’s only 23 and come the Paris Olympics of 2024, she could well be a serious gold medal contender.
